Now, you know Black Girl Blog couldn’t have gone through NYFW without doing HARLEM! This season marked the second presentation of Harlem Fashion Week, and out of the many aristocracies Harlem is known for, Fashion is most definitely one of the major components.
Established in 2016, HFW is the manifestation of daughter Yvonne Jewnell and mother Tandra Birkett (whom are delightful) as a means to a NYFW platform for up and coming artists and designers. Also being a designer herself, Yvonne like many young [black] artist felt an exclusion from the “capital F” fashion week affairs… and unlike many young artists, decided to do something about it. Thus bringing forth the NYFW event that is now Harlems’ own modern Renaissance celebration featuring emerging [black] designers to showcase their art to the communal masses during the peak of the season!
Appropriately presented at the Museum of the City of New York, the shows started Sunday evening at 7:30pm. They offered a range of cultural references, ethnic backgrounds, stylish flare and enthusiastic representation of an industry that brings us together! Designers and industry professionals alike all gathered together to not only appreciate the beauty that is the art of fashion while participating in one of the most exciting times of the year, but also learn of black businesses and build community relationships. (The event also featured a mini expo for vendors to share products!)
Split into three showtimes (7:30, 8:30, 9:30) the shows featured NY based designers offering both clothing as well as shoes and accessories. Though I missed the first showing, the final two were an exceptionally divine presentation of the talented and charismatic artists who create in the NY/Harlem fashion community. Pictured below are some of the looks featured in these presentations, with the exception of Derek Grant, Donna Kittrell, Simply Ma’aM, and Tatiana Hatchers whom were showcased in the earlier showing which I unfortunately did not make (F the F-train) but are absolutely worth looking into! Just click on them, see what I did there? You’re welcome! Thank you so much to HFW for having me attend your beautiful event, and much success to you ladies for your present and future endeavors!
